What is one skill, interest or talent of yours that makes you great at your job?

I’m very passionate about the things I do, and at the same time, I’m disruptive. I enjoy challenging systems and mindsets, and I maintain a proactive attitude towards improvement and transformation. I foster an environment where creativity and bold thinking are encouraged, ensuring that each team member feels motivated and engaged in our shared mission.

What is the best piece of unconventional career advice you’ve gotten?

Don’t waste your energy on things that are beyond your control. Rather than becoming frustrated by circumstances you can’t change, focus your efforts on areas where you can make a meaningful impact.

What is your proudest moment working in the cybersecurity industry?

When my cyber team played an active role in the safe evacuation of our employees and their families from the war zone in Ukraine. This had a huge impact, and made me very proud.

When did you become interested in pursuing a career in cyber and what prompted it?

During one of the first major cyber incidents that I participated in, I contributed to the cyber team’s remediation activities in my operational IT role. That’s when I knew that I wanted to support the cyber team with my knowledge and leadership.

What are the top 3 things you would tell people hoping to enter the cybersecurity industry?

  1. Trust and collaboration are key. Cybersecurity is not just about technology; it’s also about people working together to protect sensitive information and systems.
  2. Your unique skillset contributes to the team’s success. Regardless of your specific skills, you play a vital role in safeguarding the organization. Embrace your strengths, and be open to learning from others.
  3. Everyone’s contribution is valuable. The constantly evolving cybersecurity landscape means that there is a place for everyone in this field. Take opportunities to contribute to and grow within the industry.

What are some misconceptions people might have about the cybersecurity industry and what can we do to change these misconceptions?

The most common misconception about cybersecurity is that attacks are just science fiction and do not reflect reality. They believe that it would not affect them or their company personally.

In general, it is important not to close your eyes to the often harsh reality of cybersecurity. Be open and transparent about incidents and their potential impact.

Do you feel like you’re contributing to helping keep our world secure and can you share why that matters to you?

Absolutely. Reflecting on situations such as the war situation in Ukraine, where cybersecurity efforts have played a role in saving lives and protecting families, has changed my perspective on our work. In another case, we supported a local municipal administration to get them up and running again after a ransomware attack. In general, protecting our business from cyberattacks and incidents also helps employees, families, and surroundings.

What positive change do you think will take place as we bring the next generation into the cybersecurity industry?

The next generation will be AI-native, meaning they will have a better understanding of AI and how to use it. They will bring new ideas and experiences to the industry, driving innovation and changing our approach to cybersecurity. However, it’s important to recognize that attackers will also leverage these skills, using AI to develop more advanced and potentially more dangerous attack techniques. On the one hand, it empowers us to enhance our security capabilities; but on the other, it necessitates constant vigilance and adaptation to counteract evolving threats.

Who is your role model in the cybersecurity industry and why?

When I think about role models in the cybersecurity industry, two individuals stand out to me.

The first is Nir Zuk, the founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Palo Alto Networks. His visionary approach has inspired the cybersecurity community, significantly advanced the development of innovative technologies, and shaped the industry’s overall vision.

The second is Volker Wagner, the CISO of the BASF Group. He recognizes the importance of collaboration between industry and politics in combatting cyber threats. He has initiated efforts to unite various stakeholders, including federal authorities, to enhance our collective defenses against cybercriminals.
