“For the world to be secure, the enemy must understand that it doesn’t pay to attack others. I think my work helps reinforce that reality.”

Ken Sakata is the President of JFE Cybersecurity & Solutions. He began his career at JFE Steel, working on communications infrastructure during the mainframe era, and later led the company’s transition to internet-based systems. His focus on cybersecurity led him to serve as head of the JFE Group Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), before assuming his current leadership role.

What is one skill, interest or talent of yours that makes you great at your job?

A bit of curiosity and being able to get along with people.

What is the best piece of unconventional career advice you’ve gotten?

A former boss once reminded me that the most important thing is to approach work with honesty and integrity: never cutting corners, never misleading, and always staying true to your values.

What is your proudest moment working in the cybersecurity industry?

My proudest moments are when the work of cybersecurity teams is truly recognized, both inside the company and by society at large.

When did you become interested in pursuing a career in cyber and what prompted it?

When faced with an actual cyber incident myself.

What are the top 3 things you would tell people hoping to enter the cybersecurity industry?

  1. You’re needed.
  2. There is endless potential for growth.
  3. You always have comrades.

What are some misconceptions people might have about the cybersecurity industry and what can we do to change these misconceptions?

To those who think they won’t ever be a victim and don’t need to invest in security, remember this: Ignoring security doesn’t just put you at risk, it can also make you part of the problem.

For the world to be secure, the enemy must understand that it doesn’t pay to attack others.

I think my work helps reinforce that reality.

What positive change do you think will take place as we bring the next generation into the cybersecurity industry?

The next generation understands both the power and the fragility of digital from a young age, and that cybersecurity is inherently necessary for society. We should welcome and empower more of these digital natives to join the industry because their perspective and urgency are exactly what the future of cybersecurity needs.
