Elly van den Heuvel
“Our job is never finished. It’s important to pass down my knowledge to the next generation, especially girls.”
Elly was already paving the way for women in cyber before cybersecurity became a mainstream concern.
Elly’s journey began at The Ministry of Justice’s HRM Division before becoming Head of IT and Director for GovCERT later. Despite not having an IT background, she fearlessly embraced the challenge and opportunity. She also became one of two female heads of CERTs (Computer Emergency Response Teams) worldwide when women in cyber were scarce.
Elly believes in accepting people as they are and creating a safe space for them to flourish in ways that enhance their well-being and the world’s. She aspires to inspire future women in cyber and shape a better, more inclusive digital world for future generations.
What advice would you give a woman who wants to pursue a cyber career but doesn’t think they are qualified?
It always starts with the thought that you aren’t good or don’t know enough. You can always learn. The only way is forward, so believe in yourself and don’t become your own enemy by already thinking you can’t do it.
How can we attract more women to the cybersecurity industry?
Girls should be encouraged and free to choose a more technical education in school because that’s how interest in cybersecurity starts, and girls need an environment where they feel at ease, are listened to, and are treated equally.
What do you do for fun?
I love spending time with my kids, a son and daughter, going out for a drink or a walk. I’m married to an Australian woman. We have a camper and plan to travel through Australia.
What makes you proud to be a part of the cybersecurity industry?
I am proud to contribute to building a free and prosperous future, not only for me but also for my children and everyone’s children.
